KEY TO TERMS USED
The perennial flowers are arranged alphabetically by their latin name. The latin names are in italics.
The name may be followed by:
Sun requirements.
" NEW 2003 " If the seed is new to our catalog this year.
"seeds/oz." The number of seeds in an ounce.
The net weight and price of the packet.
Biennial. If the flower is biennial, all others are perennial.
The height of the plant.
The zone it is hardy to.
A description of the plant and its flowers.
Germination instructions:
If it says 'in the light' the seeds need to be on the surface of the soil and exposed to light to germinate.
If it says 'in the dark' the seeds need darkness to germinate.
A piece of dark plastic over the pots will do the trick if they can't be kept in a completely dark room.
If it says to 'keep them on the surface' the seeds are too small to be covered with soil.
The germination temperature is only a guide, if it is cooler the seeds will take longer to germinate.
Do not allow the soil to dry out while the seeds are germinating.
Scarifying is lightly scratching the seed so it can absorb water.
Stratifying is starting seed in warm damp conditions for 4 weeks, then cooling them for 4 weeks, and then bringing them back to warm temperatures for germination. It is a simulated winter to break the dormancy of seeds.
Transplanting:
Some plants are easy to transplant and some are difficult. Try to start those that resent transplanting directly outside. If you need to start plants that resent transplanting indoors they should each be in their own pot so their roots systems are not disturbed. Regardless of how well they tolerate transplanting all seedlings started indoors need to be hardened off before they are planted outside. Expose the seedlings to the elements in a sheltered area starting with only several hours the first day and increasing the time they spend outside each day for about a week.
Hardy seedlings can be set out in early spring. Half hardy seedlings can be set out in mid spring. Tender seedlings should be set out after all danger of frost is past.
All of the flowers are sold in packet size, most are sold in bulk as well. The bulk prices follow the description. Bulk seed does not come with planting instructions. Buy in bulk instead of buying several packets.
