"Annual" -[ Plants that complete their life cycle from seed to plant to flowering to producing seed in a year. In New England most will germinate in spring and die in the fall after producing seed.

"Biennial" - Plants that complete their life cycle in 2 years. They usually germinate in fall, overwinter as small plants and bloom the following year.

"Perennial" - Plants that live for at least 3 years and usually much longer. They do not normally bloom the first year after started from seed. They start blooming in their second year and every year after that.

"Tender perennial" - A plant which would be hardy in its native habitat but which will not overwinter in New England and is treated as an annual in Zones 5-6.

Perennial and biennial plants have their cold hardiness listed by zone. Most of Connecticut is Zone 5 with the shoreline being Zone 6. For other states call your cooperative extension service.

A description of the plant and some of its uses.

Germination instructions:

If it says 'in the light' the seeds need to be on the surface of the soil and exposed to light to germinate.

If it says 'in the dark' the seeds need darkness to germinate. A piece of dark plastic over the pots will do the trick if they can't be kept in a completely dark room.

If it says to keep them on the surface, the seeds are too small to be covered with soil.

The germination temperature is a guide. Temperatures that are cooler will usually be fine but the seeds will take longer to germinate.

Do not allow the soil to dry out while the seeds are germinating. Scarifying is lightly scratching the seed so it can absorb water. Stratifying is starting seed in warm damp conditions for 4 weeks, then cooling them for 4 weeks and then bringing them back to warm temperatures for germination. It is a simulated winter to break the dormancy of seeds.

Transplanting:

Some plants are easy to transplant and others are more difficult. Try to start those that resent transplanting directly outside. If you need to start plants that resent transplanting indoors they should each be in their own pot so their root systems are disturbed as little as possible. Regardless of how well they tolerate transplanting, all seedlings started indoors need to be hardened off before they are planted outside. Expose the seedlings to the elements in a sheltered area starting with only several hours the first day and increasing the time they spend outside each day for about a week.

Hardy seedlings can be set out in early spring. Half hardy seedlings can be set out in mid spring. Tender seedlings should be set out after all danger of frost is past.

All herbs are sold in packet size, most are sold in bulk as well. The bulk prices follow the description. Keep in mind that the bulk seed package does not come imprinted with planting instructions.
