David Austin’s English Roses

The English roses are considered shrub roses by the American Rose Society. They are crosses between modern floribundas and hybrid teas with old fashioned roses such as Gallicas, Portlands and Damasks. The flowers are generally rounded or “cabbage-like” in appearance, and have many types of fragrances such as tea, rose, myrrh, fruit scent and damask. Most of the English roses repeat their bloom almost continuously throughout the growing season. Most have a more shrubby growth than hybrid teas and can vary in size from 2’ x 2’ up to 7’ x 7’. They are generally more hardy (zone 5 or -20 F) and have better disease resistance than hybrid teas.

Shrub Roses

Shrub roses are used primarily for landscape purposes rather than for cut flowers. The size of the shrub and type of flower vary greatly for roses in this category. Some shrub roses are almost like ground covers, growing only 1 foot tall and spreading 3 feet. Other shrub roses grow as large as 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide. Some of the flowers resemble hybrid teas in form, yet others are more like wild roses with single flowers (only 5 petals). Shrub roses have superior disease resistance and hardiness, making them a must for a low maintenance garden. All of the selections that we sell in this category bloom repeatedly.

Hybrid Teas and Grandifloras

Hybrid tea roses are used most often as cut flowers. They have large, high centered double flowers and usually bloom 1-3 to a stem. They grow as an upright shrub about 4-5 feet tall. Hybrid teas were created by a cross between hybrid perpetuals and tea roses. They are generally hardy to zone 6 (-10 F), but will perform better if protected in winter by mounding soil up to 6 inches high at the base of the plant. Some hybrid teas are susceptible to diseases such as black spot and mildew, but spraying once a week will prevent this. There are, however, many hybrid teas that are resistant to diseases and they are noted below. Hybrid teas are one of the most rewarding plants to grow. They bloom continuously throughout the growing season and have exquisite flowers.

Grandifloras are very similar to hybrid teas. They are a cross between hybrid teas and floribundas. The flowers are slightly smaller than hybrid teas, but larger than floribundas. The high centered, double flowers are usually born in clusters of 3-5 flowers.

Rose Care

CULTURE: Roses grow best if situated in an open, sunny location with fertile, welldrained soil. Roses should not be planted where their roots will need to compete with trees and large shrubs. However, bulbs, annuals and perennials make good companion plantings.

PLANTING: Dig a hole the same depth as the soil in the container making sure thecrown is slightly below the soil level. The hole should be twice the width of the root ball or container. Incorporate 25% peat moss and 25% humus or compost matter with the existing soil. Fill half the hole with the mixture and tamp firmly. Place the plant in the hole and continue to fill and tamp around the plant. Water thoroughly after planting.

FERTILIZING: Use the recommended dose of Rose Tone or Plant Tone and green sand once a monthduring the growing season. (April - September.)

WINTERIZING: Rake up fallen leaves from around the plant.Give roses a good deep watering. Mound 6-8 inches of mulch or soil over the crown of the plant after the ground freezes and prune back branches to the main canes about the second week of November. To prune, make a diagonal cut 1/4 inch above a bud that faces to the outside of the bush. Use a glue stick to seal the cut. The canes may be sprayed with Wilt Pruf when the temperature is above 40°F to prevent desiccation. It is not necessary to prune climbing roses except to clean and maintain shape.

PROBLEMS: Roses are prone to a wide range of problems; powdery mildew, black spot, rust, thrips, and japanese beetles, to name a few. There are rose dusts and sprays available. It is a good idea to spray or dust on a regular basis as a preventative. (Do not spray rugosa roses with chemicals as this will burn the foliage). If the insects or diseases strike before you can prevent them, it can lead to unsightly foliage, as well as limited blooming and weaker plants. Ask us for assistance. We will provide the best information and products for your roses.

WINTERIZING TREE ROSES: If winter temperatures fall below 10 degrees F. you should cover your tree roses for protection. Do this by laying the rose down. Remove the stake, and if the trunk cannot be bent without danger of breaking, lift one side of the root ball so that the trunk can be laid flat. Cover the top trunk and exposed roots with soil then mulch with straw.
