MORE ABOUT

SEEDS AND OUR SEED CATALOG

........We think you will find the descriptions that accompany our seed listings to be informative.  A Key to Terms is located at the end of each seed-list web page.  They provide additional growing information as well as definitions of terms used.  You may also find the following information helpful:

........Heirloom herbs and vegetables are those which have been open pollinated for at least 50 years.  They are ideal for seed savers.  We take great pride in the number of heirloom varieties we carry.

........Open pollinated herbs and vegetables are those which have been cultivated for less than 50 years. In   time, these varieties will become heirlooms.  They are ideal for seed savers.

........F1-Hybrids are plants resulting from a cross between two or more parent plants that are more or less unlike.  They do not produce true in the next generation or may be sterile.  They are not suitable for seed savers.  Most are vigorous and produce more food or flowers per plant than non-hybrids.

........Annuals are plants that complete their life cycle in one growing season.  The seed is sown, the plant grows, produces seed and dies all within one year.  In New England most will germinate in spring and die in the fall after producing seed.

........Biennials are plants that complete their life cycle in two growing seasons.  They usually germinate in fall, over winter as small plants and bloom the following year, set their seed and die.

........Perennials are plants that live for at least three years and usually much longer. They do not normally bloom the first year after started from seed.  They start blooming in their second year.

........Zone Maps are based on the average annual minimum temperature in an area.  This has been found generally to agree with the known hardiness limit of plants.

........AAS - The All American Selections award for an outstanding new breeding development.  The AAS trial program was started in 1932.  AAS winners have been grown in test gardens throughout the United States and have performed well in all regions.

........Treated Seeds - Many of our customers prefer that their seed be free of fungicides or other chemicals.  We agree with this philosophy and therefore the vast majority of our seed is untreated.  Untreated seed may be requested on the Order Form.

........Seed viability - Our seed is independently tested for germination and we only offer seed which exceeds the requirements set by the United States government.

........Availability - We make every attempt to keep all seed varieties in stock.  We sell packets and bulk seed year round for our customers' convenience although supplies may be limited later in the season.
