Temperennials   

        'Bodacious Temperennials'   -  What is Bodacious?  Unusual and Outrageous!  Great garden plants you should try.  Just because they are not perennial in our northern zones, don't ignore them!  They offer great foliage, extravagant color, a tropical flare and pizzazz in the summer and fall.  These hot new items will make you the envy of your garden club.  There are many more varieties available at Comstock than are listed below.  Stop in and see for yourself!

Bodacious Temperenials

Agave attenuata  - Spinele Agave      

A great slow growing succulent for xeriscaping, with large sword-like leaves similar in appearance to yucca.  It prefers a sunny location and excellent drainage.  Let the soil dry out between watering.  Grows 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide.   Unlike other members of this family, it will not die after flowering.  In a warm climate, it will produce suckers  and form a small colony.  It is hardy to zone 10.

 

 

 

Artemisia vulgaris 'Oriental Limelight' - Variegated Mugwort     

Noted for its yellow and green finely dissected foliage.  To have it form a mounded clump 2-3' tall, it is best to cut it back occasionally so it won't flag.   Whlte the species spreads vigouously by rhizomes, this variegated form is less invasive.  The small white flowers are inconspicious.  It is hardy from zones 4-8.  PP#12788

 

 

 

Begonia rex 'Escargot'      

This is a sensatinal conservatory plant with silvery leaves tht have a greenish bornze edge tht spiral towcurassavica:  Brilliant orange flowers bloom straight through until frost.

 

 

 

Brugmansia - Angel's Trumpet      

An Angel's Trumpet in full flower is an awesome specimen. Huge, 10" trumpet shaped blossoms dangle from the branches. The flowers are scented with a sweet, intoxicating fragrance. Use as a container plant near a pathway to take advantage of all of its charms.      
arborea : 6-8' trees produce clusters of 10" dangling white trumpets throughout the summer.       
aurea 'Golden Queen' : 10" soft yellow trumpets in summer.  Strong scent at night.       
x candida 'Grand Marnier' :  Huge, soft apricot pink trumpets.

 

 

 

Coleus      

An old fashioned Victorian favorite for the shade garden, this is now one of the hottest annuals available.  It is due in part to its amazing variety of colorful foliage in bicolor, tricolor and multicolor mixes of hot pink, shocking orange, green black and more. Flashy and gorgeous, it is outstanding, adding a tropical flare to the border or to containers.      
'Black Magic' "   Small mahogany-purple leaves outlined in lime green scallops.       
' Cantigny Royale' :  Tiny dark burgundy leaves only 1/2" across.  Looks like purple foliaged boxwood.       
' Flirtin' Skirts' :  Fringed leaves with red threads on the leaves.  Very showy.       
'Inky Fingers' : Dark red centers and white finger like edges.       
'Lime Ruffles' :  Chartreuse to golden leaves with ruffled edges.        
'Solar Flare' : Almost paisley pattern, starting with purple red centers, outlined in green, enclosed with a red ring that has a light green edge.       
'Summertime Wine' : Scalloped chartreuse leaves edged and splashed with burgundy red.

 

 

 

Farfugium - Leopard Plant      

This plant was new to us only a year ago.  We were impressed with the round spotted leaves and the bright daisy flowers - all for the shade.      
japonicum ( grande) :Also known as Ligularia tussilaginea or Senecio kaempferi this Ligularia relative has huge round and glossy leaves up to 2' tall. In late season it forms stalks topped with clusters of yellow daisies.  Prefers moist shade.       
' Aureomaculatum' :  Fascinating glossy leaves 6" across that are dark green with gold and yellow spots placed randomly on the leaf.  No wonder it is known as the Leopard plant. Large daisy like flowers bloom in early summer.

 

 

 

Fuchsia      

The exotic flowers of these highly hybridized plants are brightly colored, often double, or semi-double with bicolor blossoms. Subtle tones of red, purple, pink, and of course, fuchsia are found in the hundreds of cultivars available.  As a hanging pot plant or trained as a standard, all Fuchsias lend an exotic note to a tropical style garden. Most prefer shade but many are sun tolerant.      
'Dark Eyes' :  Trailing with flowers that have double purple corollas and red sepals. Prefers shade.       
' Herbe de Jacques ': Upright growth to 12" with flowers that have purple corollas and red sepals.  Sun tolerant.       
'June Bride ': Upright to 12" with flowers that have pink corollas and rose pink sepals.  Prefers shade.       
' Swingtime' : Trailing growth with flowers that have double white corollas and red sepals.  Prefers shade.

 

 

 

Gaura lindheimeri -     Wand Flower     

This graceful, very long blooming native tolerates both drought and extreme heat and humidity. Not utilized enough in northern gardens.      
'Dauphin' : Rigidly upright, 4-5 ' stems with dark pink buds that give way to dainty pink flowers that fade to white.  Blooms at least 6 months. Needs full sun and excellent drainage. A real nonstop performer.

 

 

 

Heliotropium arborescens - Heliotrope       

Highly valued for the vanilla fragrance of the flat cluster of deep purple flowers which are set against dark green leaves.  An excellent container or bedding plant, it can also be used as a standard.      
'Marine' :  Dark violet flowers with baby powder fragrance on a plant that grows 18" tall.

 

 

 

Ipomoea batatas -    Sweet Potato Vine     

This ornamental cultivar of the sweet potato offers more than edible tubers.  Its bold leaf shapes and colors are stunning in combination with dark red flowers or silvery foliaged plants.      
'Black Heart' :  Purple, almost black heart shaped leaves on a creeping vine.       
'Blackie' :  Purple, deeply lobed leaves. Very versatile in containers with most any color combination.       
'Margarita' :  This brilliant chartreuse leafed form adds amazing color when used with orange or blues and purples.  A good trailing plant for containers.

 

 

 

Leonotis leonurus -    Lion's Ear     

This South African native gets it name from the fuzzy orange flowers which may (or may not) resemble a large cat's ears.  Blooming very late in the season, Leonotis gives the fall garden a much needed exclamation point. Tall and architectural it is striking combined with the dark blue of fall blooming salvias.      
leonurus :  This sub-shrub can reach 6' but stays manageable with pinching.  The whorls of bright orange flowers bloom late summer through fall. In the mint family, the foliage smells of lemon.

 

 

 

Pentas lanceolata - Egyptian Stars      

An import from tropical Arabia and Africa these vividly colored sub-shrubs bloom abundantly from spring until hard frost. The clusters of red, pink, or white flowers attract butterflies.  The reds are hot with the annual grass, Pennisetum setaceum ' Rubrum' and Coleus; the pink with the silver purple leaf of the Persian Shield.      
'Clean White Shorts' :  White Egyptian Stars. Panicles of pure white flowers over 18" stems bearing deep green leaves. Blooms late June to frost and needs no dead heading.       
'Pink Profusion' : Pink flowers with white throats, grows 12-18" tall.  Perfect for containers.       
'Ruby Glow' :  Ruby red star shaped flowers.  One of our most poplar plants.

 

 

 

Salvia      

Members of the Mint Family, most are well known perennials.  An entire range of color and diversity exists with those we treat as annuals in our northern climate.  We value these plants in the garden and list only a   few of the many we carry.      
blepharophylla 'Diablo' :  A deep red cultivar that will bloom from June to frost.       
discolor :  Nearly black corolla with a gray calyx on silvery gray foliage. Most unusual.       
greggii ' Orange Yucca Do' : Grows to 2 1/2' with orange scarlet flowers in spring and fall.       
guaranitica   Cobalt blue flowers.  Grows 2-3' tall.  Does well in summer heat and blooms most of the season.       
uliginosa :  3-4' spikes of sky blue florets from summer until early fall.

 

 

 

Scaevola - Fan Flower      

aemula 'Blue Sky' :  Prostrate stems form myriads of sky blue, fan-like flowers all season.  Great as a ground cover but even better in hanging baskets.  Full sun to part shade. 

 

 

 

Strobilanthes - Persian Shield      

This beautiful plant has a metallic coloration to its long leaves which are purple and silver above and a darker purple below. The purple and silver hues intensify when combined with the purple flowers of Tibouchina or the silvery leaves of Helichrysum.      
dyerianus : Large leaves of silver purple with deep maroon undersides.  Grows 2-3' tall, preferring moist soils in shady areas.

 

 

 

Tibouchina   Brazilian Glory Bush or Princess Flower     

A most unusual and elegant plant, Tibouchinas always draw admiration. From late summer into fall the clusters of silky royal purple flowers are upstaged only by the velvet leaves.  In large containers, under planted with purple verbena or Strobilanthes, they are glorious.      
semidecandra :   Deeply veined oval leaves are overlaid in silver.  2" purple flowers from early summer to frost.  Quite a tree if not pruned yearly.

 

 

 

Verbena      

One of the most popular of all garden annual flowers. The compact clusters of flowers are colored pink, red, purple and white. They bloom all season and are suitable for the garden as well as being exceptional container plants.       
bonariensis : The tallest of the verbenas.  This may self sow in your garden.  5-6' wiry stems bear flat panicles of purple flowers all summer. Light and airy nevertheless.       
'Homestead Purple' " Beautiful, mildew resistant dark green foliage with velvety rich purple flowers all season on a low spreading plant.       
' Sissinghurst' :  Beautiful groundcover with deep pink blossoms all summer long.       
'Purple' : Prostrate habit and delicate finely cut green foliage.  Can trail 12-18" with purple flowers all season.  Wonderful for hanging baskets.
